Freight traffic
The European Corridor does not just involve radically improved possibilities for fast and comfortable transportation of people. It will also free up the capacity of the South and West Main Line, for freight traffic and fast regional trains.
At present there are conflicts here, above all between express trains on the one hand and freight trains and regional trains on the other.
As most of the express trains run on the European Line/Götaland Line, the main line can cope effectively with trade and industry’s growing need for export and import of staple commodities. It is important to be able to offer basic industry direct trains to the continent – trains with high capacity, which maintain fixed times and with effective feeder transports to the ports.
For finished and semi-finished goods, combined traffic can be developed. The current combined traffic system of trailers, containers and interchangeable containers – so-called ”heavy combi” – will be supplemented with a system of multiple small terminals close to local markets – ”light combi”. The light combi system has fully automatic combi terminals where the trains rapidly load and unload containers.
For highly processed goods, spare parts, post and parcels, special express freight trains can be developed that are faster than lorries and cheaper than air transport. Light express freight trains can use both the European Line and the Southern Main Line towards the continent with transport times that are almost as short as passenger trains. In this context the railway can offer entirely new transport possibilities for the growing market of high grade goods, with extremely short transport times and high quality.
