What is the European Corridor?
The European Corridor is the region where approximately 65% of Sweden’s BNP is generated. About 80% of all Swedes who study at university or college do so within the European Corridor. About 65% of Sweden’s population, 5.5 million people, live within 60 minutes travelling time of the corridor’s core.
The European Corridor is based on the expansion of two lines: the European line, which follows the E4 and runs between Stockholm, Jönköping, Copenhagen and Hamburg. The Götaland Line, which follows an east-west route alongside the riksväg 40 motorway, from Stockholm via Jönköping to Göteborg.
The European Corridor can be described as a broadband for physical transportation, with positive effects locally and regionally, as well as nationally and internationally. It’s width is equal to the distance that can be travelled in 60 minutes from the stations that are planned along the European Line and the Götaland Line. Connecting trains which run on both the new and already existing tracks and which interlink with other means of transport – car, bus, air and shipping – increase accessibility far beyond the corridor.
The European Corridor does not just link up Sweden’s metropolitan areas. Several of the country’s most important medium-sized regions will also be brought closer to the big cities – and to each other. In the European Corridor co-operation will be generated in networks, based on modern, fast communications.
